Sectional brackets revealed for area boys hoops

Boys basketball is entering the final week of the regular season and that means that the post-season tournament is right around the corner. Sunday evening the IHSAA revealed the brackets during their annual pairings show and now all four of our area teams now know their post-season paths. Let’s take a look at how the brackets turned out.

Class A Sectional 54 @ Fountain Central

What a year that it’s been for Greg Dean and the Fountain Central Mustangs. Entering Tuesday FC has a stellar record of 18-4 on the season as the Mustangs are ranked fourth in Class A. The Mustangs will get the luxury of getting the chance to cut down the nets on their home floor as they host the Class A Sectional 54 tournament.

FC will play right away next Tuesday (Feb. 28) as they will take on Attica in the opening game of the tournament at 6 pm. Back on Dec. 16 the Mustangs throttled the Red Ramblers (0-20) 63-15. The winner between the Mustangs and Red Ramblers will take on North Vermillion (6-15) who drew the bye into the semi-finals on Friday.

The bottom half of the bracket will see 4-17 Clinton Central square off with 8-13 South Vermillion in the opening round on Tuesday. The winner will get Rossville (11-11) in the second semi-final on Friday.

Fountain Central are the heavy favorites to bring home their first sectional title since 2015.

Class 2A Sectional 44 @ Southmont

The Mounties, like the Mustangs, also have the luxury of hosting the Class 2A Sectional 44 tournament. The Mounties (15-6) are the defending sectional champions and will see the North Putnam Cougars (13-9) in the second game of the tournament which will be next Wednesday at 6 pm. It’ll be re-match from the season opener where the Cougars bested the Mounties 46-36.

The winner between the Mounties and Cougars will take on the winner of Cloverdale (2-21) and Riverton Parke (8-13) in the semi-final on Friday.

In the top half of the bracket Greencastle (6-16) and Parke Heritage (14-9). That winner will get South Putnam in the first semi-final on Friday.

South is one of the favorites along with the Wolves and Cougars as the Mounties look to make it back-to-back sectional titles.

Class 3A Sectional 22 @ Frankfort

Case Arena is the home to the Class 3A Sectional 22 tournament which features the North Montgomery Chargers. North Montgomery (5-16) will have their hands full in their opening round game as they take on 16-5 Rensselaer Central in game two on Wednesday. The Bombers, currently, have the best record of the seven teams in the sectional.

The winner between the Chargers and Bombers will take on the winner of host Frankfort (10-11) and Benton Central (15-7) in Friday’s semi-final.

In the top half of the bracket 8-13 Twin Lakes drew the bye and will play the winner of 12-10 West Lafayette and 12-9 Western.

Class 3A Sectional 25 @ Danville

A bulk of the Sagamore Conference makes up the Class 3A Sectional 25 which is hosted by Danville this year. The Crawfordsville Athenians are one of the six teams vying for a sectional crown. In the opening game on Tuesday Crawfordsville (8-12) will take on Monrovia (6-16) with the winner playing Tri-West (10-11) in Friday’s semi-final.

In the bottom of the bracket the two favorites for the tile are featured. Host Danville (15-6) will take on Western Boone (6-15) in the second game on Tuesday. 15-7 and out-right SAC champion Lebanon drew the other bye and will get the winner between the Warriors and Stars.
