Chargers lose a second close game

DELPHI - Tuesday ended the way it started for North Montgomery’s boys basketball team - a close loss at the Delphi gym.

The 48-45 setback to the host Oracles in the second game of the Indiana Kitchen Holiday Classic ended a tough day for the Chargers, who fall to 0-8 heading into the Christmas break.

Coupled with the 46-45 loss to Rossville earlier in the day, North was just that close, but in the end, fell just that short.

A Colton Zachary three-pointer with :58.5 left in the fourth quarter gave the Chargers their first lead since early in the third quarter, but a missed checkout on a rebound saw the Oracles take the lead back a half-minute later. After a missed shot by North, two free throws by Delphi with 1.5 ticks left set the final score.

Coming off the bench, Zachary scored nine of his 14 points in the fourth quarter, as the junior helped his squad overcome what had been as much as a six-point deficit.

“Colton hit a couple of big shots,” North coach Chad Arnold said. “He’s a good shooter and he looked for his shots. I’m proud of that big fourth quarter. I’m also really pleased with how hard Nolan Graham played when he came in. He caused some turnovers and played good defense.”

The Chargers jumped out to an early lead, hitting their first three three-point shots.

Unfortunately, they didn’t hit another until Zachary’s three with under a minute left, as the shooting touch just wasn’t there.

Turnovers were also a factor, especially in the first half, as the Oracles took advantage of 10 miscues to score 11 points.

“Give Delphi credit,” Arnold said of the home team, who won their first game of the season against six losses. “They did a good job on defense and they deserved to win. They played hard, and we didn’t match that. We weren’t as focused for this second game as we were this afternoon (against Rossville). If we had been as focused tonight as we were against Rossville, I think we win by 20.”

As it was, the Oracles picked up the win, hitting some big free throws down the stretch. They hit five of their last six from the line, and were 9-of-14 in the fourth quarter.

They put three in double-figures, starting with Chase Almager’s 16. The sophomore was followed by freshman Walker Jones, who had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Brock Burton added a dozen, as the Oracles were 15-of-40 from the field, 2-of-9 from long range and 16-of-27 from the stripe. They also won the rebound battle 41-28. Almager had nine.

The Chargers were led in scoring by Jarrod Kirsch, as the sophomore dropped 15 points before fouling out late in the game.

Overall, North was 15-of-41 from the field, 5-of-15 from deep and 10-of-17 from the line. Treyce Pittman off the bench and Jakob Kirsch each had five rebounds to lead the Chargers. They finished with 14 turnovers.

“Growing pains of a young team,” Arnold noted. “We had too many turnovers in the first half, and there were times when we made a good move to the rim and then didn’t make a good decision at the rim that led to turnovers. We just have to get back at it after the holiday and keep on learning and working.”

The Chargers will take a couple days off for the holiday before getting back to practice. Their next game is Jan. 4 at Sheridan.

“Our JV team got a good win today against Delphi,” Arnold said of the non-stop action that had boys and girls varsity and junior varsity games being played. “We also want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday season.”
