Athenian defense leads to road win over Red Devils

WEST LAFAYETTE – Defense and shot selection ruled the night for Crawfordsville in a 48-32 win over West Lafayette.

Limiting the home team to only 12 field goals while scoring 18 points off of turnovers and getting 32 points in the paint, The Athenians jumped out to a 9-0 lead and never trailed, as they move to 3-2 with the win, while the Red Devils fall to 2-3.

“We were patient all night on offense, we took great shots and we rebounded well,” Cville coach David Pierce said. We played great defense, got them tired and we had guys really play well.”

Guys took turns, as Ian Hensley scored nine of his game-best 17 points in the first quarter, and Alex Hernandez dropped six of his eight in the second. Ziair Morgan scored 11 of his 13 in the second half, including four in a row from the line down the stretch.

“I’m just super-proud of the guys,” Pierce said. “Alex Hernandez played really well, Ian Hensley took some really good shots, Ziair only had two turnovers while handling the ball all game, and every sub came in thinking about defense. Gavin Kenny got the start tonight and played great defense.”

That defense limited the Red Devils all night.

Missing two leading scorers due to Covid protocols, the home team managed to hit only 12 field goals, one in the second and two in the third. They finished 12-of-35 from the field, 3-of-14 from long range and 5-of-6 from the line.

Leading the scoring for WL was Jack Montes, as the junior had 16.

“Defense was the name of the game tonight,” Pierce noted. “We had a couple learning situations late when they put on some pressure, but the bottom line is that we held them to 32 points.”

The Athenians had a couple scoring streaks to pad the scoreboard.

A 9-0 run started the game, an 8-0 streak opened the second quarter, and it was 6-0 to open the fourth.

“We were patient, we passed the all well and looked for open guys,” Pierce said.

In the first half, in fact, the Athenians on 13 field goals had helpers on each one, with an assist, a put-back on an offensive reboud, or a steal setting up each field goal.

Morgan, Hernandez and Mekhi Wallace each finished with three helpers, while Hensley had four steals.

For the game, Crawfordsville was 20-of-36 from the floor, 1-of-7 from deep and 7-of-10 from the line. Morgan and Wallace each had six caroms. Cville had 14 turnovers and forced 13, scoring the 18 points off. They won the rebound battle 29-14, and had a 13-0 margin on second-chance points.

The Red Devils are under the direction of Jacob VanArsdel, who took over for the retired David Wood.

Westside will play North Montgomery later in the season, and the Athenians next opponent is that same Chargers team next Friday.
