Chargers earn first SAC win - North Montgomery downs Frankfort 70-59

LINDEN — North Montgomery used balanced scoring and good free throw shooting to pick up their first Sagamore Athletic Conference victory of the season. The Chargers defeated Frankfort 70-59 at home on Friday night. A foursome of Chargers scored in double-figures and two other players recorded nine points allowing North Montgomery to overcome a barrage of three-point baskets by the Hot Dogs. Charger coach Chad Arnold said his team’s offense continues to improve and that is why his team has been shooting better with balanced scoring. “We are a lot more patient and a better offensive team,” Arnold said. “We are moving the ball and getting it into the paint. We have guys who can score.” After North Montgomery (10-9, 1-5) jumped out to a 17-12 first quarter lead the Hot Dogs got red-hot in the second period. Frankfort scored 28 points in the quarter behind substitute Riley Goodnight’s four treys. Frankfort’s Trey Frazier and Braden Compton also connected from behind the arch. In the half, Frankfort hit 10 3-point shots. The Chargers countered with 22 points of their own in the second quarter led by Logan Kelly’s two treys and Keifer Carmean’s six points. However, when the dust settled, Frankfort had battled to a 40-39 lead at the break. The Chargers wasted little time regaining the lead at the start of the third quarter. North Montgomery took the lead for good at the 6:45 mark of the third quarter when Preston Shaw got hot. The senior connected on 3 three-point baskets and a two-pointer which helped his team take a 56-48 lead into the final quarter. The Chargers slowed the ball down in the fourth quarter and used good free throw shooting to stay ahead in the game. North Montgomery was 7-of-9 in the period. In the game the Chargers were 18-of-20. Again, Arnold expressed how pleased he was to see his team execute in the final quarter to maintain the lead. “For the most part we were moving around and sharing the ball and we took care of the ball better,” Arnold said. The Charger defense stiffened in the second half and only allowed Frankfort 19 second half points. Keifer Carmean and Zak Searle led the Chargers in scoring with 13 points apiece. Jaron Badford and Preston Shaw contributed 11 and 10 points respectively. Leading scorer in the game was Frankfort’s Trey Frazier who scored 22 points. Braden Compton added 11 and Goodnight finished with 14. The Chargers will return to action Tuesday when they travel to North Putnam. Frankfort will be home against Carroll on Tuesday.
