Athenians drop contest to Wolves

Crawfordsville’s girls’ basketball team couldn’t get the shots to fall in a 55-43 loss to Parke Heritage Saturday. The Athenians fall to 2-12 with the loss while the Wolves move to 6-10. “We got a lot of good looks,” Crawfordsville coach Tyler Smith said. “We just have to make them fall, especially in the first half. Too many good shots just didn’t connect.” The home team kept their turnovers down and stayed even with PH on the boards, but 37 missed shots were simply too many. Going 17-of-54 for the game, the Athenians were behind by double-digits early in the second quarter and never recovered. A fourth quarter highlighted by forcing seven turnovers and some baskets off steals were still not enough to offset the missed shots. “We had great energy and passion in the fourth quarter,” Smith noted. “We need more of that in the first three.” Crawfordsville also took away the inside game of the Wolves, who then responded by dropping 3-pointers from all spots. They hit four treys in the first eight minutes. “We did a really good job of defending the post,” Smith said. “But teams all have Plan B’s when Plan A doesn’t work. We have to adjust better and quicker to those changes. I don’t have 50 timeouts to make changes – some of those have to come on the fly. We wanted them to take the three’s — but they needed to be contested three’s.” Sophomore Kearston Hutchens also earned her first career varsity start, and the sophomore had four points and five rebounds. “Kearston has played well lately,” Smith said. “She works hard every day and hasn’t missed a single practice. She also helps on our press.” The Athenians also finished the game with only 13 turnovers, and forced 16 by the Wolves. They scored 15 points off those turnovers. Leading the scoring for CHS was Lauren Kellerman with 20 points. Shea Williamson finished with eight as the Athenians were 5of-23 from 3-point range and 4-of-8 from the line. Kellerman had eight rebounds and Williamson seven as the Athenians lost the rebound battle 37-35. The Wolves put three in double-figures, starting with Grace Ramsey’s 16, followed by fellow sophomore Hannah O’Brien with 12. Lexi Jones had 11. PH was 20-of-48 from the field, 9-of-29 from deep and 6-of-9 from the line. Ramsey and Madison Millspaugh each had eight rebounds. The Athenians are back in action Tuesday when they play host to Sheridan. “It’s a confidence thing,” Smith said. “We need that same rebounding effort, turnover effort and then work on the Plan B adjustments. Then the shots will fall.” PARKE HERITAGE 55 CRAWFORDSVILLE 43 Parke Heritage 18 10 14 13 — 55 Crawfordsville 9 7 14 13 — 43 Parke Heritage (6-10) Jones 4-13 0-0 11, Macy Millspaugh 0-1 0-0 0, Madison Millspaugh 2-5 2-2 7, Ramsey 5-11 2-3 16, Jeffries 1-3 0-0 2, Mack 0-2 0-0 0, Wilson 2-3 0-0 4, O’Brien 5-6 2-4 12, Kiefner 1-4 0-0 3.
