Wabash Erases Early Deficit For 79-61 Win Over OWU

Wabash overcame a sluggish start in its opening North Coast Athletic Conference basketball game Wednesday night versus Ohio Wesleyan to claim a 79-61 home victory.
The Little Giants (5-2, 1-0 NCAC), playing without seniors Colten Garland, Alex Eberhard, and Harrison Hallstrom, fell behind 8-0 in the first four minutes of the game before Tyler Watson ended a Wabash 0-for-7 shooting effort with a three-point basket. Wabash trailed Ohio Wesleyan (4-2, 0-1 NCAC) by as many as 11 points before Parker Manges and Justin Hensley sparked a comeback effort for the Little Giants.
Manges entered the game with Wabash trailing 14-5 with 13:06 on the first-period clock. After Ohio Wesleyan's Grant Gossard hit a layup to put the Battling Bishops up 16-5, Manges answered with a put-back basket to start a 15-0 run by the Little Giants. Hensley connected on three consecutive three-point shots to pull the Little Giants even at 16-16. Manges added a free throw and a three-point basket for a 20-16 Wabash lead with 7:16 left to play in the opening half.
Ohio Wesleyan stayed close until the final minute of the first period. Wabash held a four-point lead at 35-31 when Kellen Schreiber broke free inside and hit a layup and drew a foul. He added the free throw to give the Little Giants a 38-31 lead. The Bishops missed on their next trip down the floor. Ahmoni Jones grabbed the rebound and allowed Wabash to set up for the final shot of the half. Jack Davidson hit a buzzer-beating three-point attempt for his only basket of the first half to put the Little Giants up 41-31 at the break.
Davidson took over in the opening minutes of the second half. He scored the first five points of the period to put Wabash in front by 13 points. Watson added a three-point basket to push the lead to 16 points at 49-33. OWU never got closer than 14 points in the remainder of the game.
Davidson led the Little Giants with 20 points. Schreiber, Hensley, and Watson each finished with 12 points. Connor Rotterman scored 10 points and handed out five assists coming off the bench. Davidson added four assists as Wabash finished with 12 total assists for the game. The Little Giants held a two-rebound advantage over Ohio Wesleyan, 36-34. Manges, Jones, and Jayden Edwards finished with six rebounds apiece.
Gabe Johnson scored 16 points for Ohio Wesleyan and grabbed nine rebounds.
Wabash will play at conference co-leader Wooster Saturday, December 7. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
