
A 19-4 scoring run by Elmhurst midway through the second half of Saturday's basketball game against Wabash sent the 23rd-ranked Little Giants to an 83-66 road loss. Wabash (4-2) took a 48-47 lead with 14:54 remaining in the game on a Jack Davidson three-point basket. Elmhurst (5-0), sitting just outside the top-25 in the latest D3hoops.com rankings, scored the next 10 points over the span of three minutes to jump in front 57-48. Jay Militello scored back-to-back baskets to start the big run for the Bluejays. Jake Rhode finished the run with a transition three-pointer off a rebound and outlet pass from Militello. Rhode scored a team-high 19 points after being held scoreless by the Little Giants in the first half. Tyler Watson ended the scoring run with a floater in the lane for Wabash. Elmhurst responded with an 11-2 run to push the lead to 16 points at 68-52 with 8:28 left to play. Wabash cut the lead to 13 points on a three-point play Jayden Edwards but would get no closer. The Bluejays stretched the lead to as many as 20 points with 2:40 left in the game. Wabash fell behind 8-2 in the early going and trailed by as many 10 points midway through the first half. The Little Giants eventually tied the game at 29-29 on a Justin Hensley three-point shot with 2:36 left in the first half. Elmhurst regained the lead at 33-31 before a Kellen Schreiber layup with 25 seconds left sent the teams to the locker room tied at 33-33. Wabash was held to 26-of-67 (38.8 percent) shooting for the game and 9-of-20 from three-point range. The Little Giants were outrebounded 46-36 by the Bluejays, who shot 29-of-67 from the field overall for 43.3 percent. Wabash finished 5-of-7 from the free throw line while Elmhurst connected on 14-of-17 shots from the charity stripe. Schreiber paced Wabash with a season-high 20 points. Edwards added 11 points and Watson chipped in 10 points. Rhode's 19 led the Bluejays in scoring while Militello added 15 points. Lavon Thomas scored 14 points and led Elmhurst with 11 rebounds. Derek Dotlich tossed in 12 points. Wabash opens the North Coast Athletic Conference portion of its schedule on Wednesday at home against Ohio Wesleyan University. Tipoff at Chadwick Court is 7 p.m.
