Nestled in the middle of the Cradle of Basketball, which is Montgomery and Tippecanoe Counties, sits this iconic gym, which served as home to the Crawfordsville Athenians for 53 years. It opened in 1939 and closed in 1993 when Crawfordsville, who won the first IHSAA championship in 1911, moved to their new school and gym. The official seating capacity for the gym is 2,650 in its old wooden bleachers. In 1999 the school reopened as the Athena Fitness Center and senior apartments, before the Athena Fitness Center closed in the spring of 2019. It is to be determined what will happen with the space of the gym, which has been used sparingly for special events since Crawfordsville moved into their new gymnasium in 1993. The sister gym to Crawfordsville’s is Lebanon’s Memorial Hall.
