NEW MARKET — North Montgomery’s girls basketball teams saw its’ season come to a close Saturday night with a IHSAA Sectional semi-final loss to Benton Central 64-24.
The Bison shot out of the gate like a cannonball to start the game, jumping ahead 24-0 after one quarter. Kelsey Coffman, Emma Fisher, Audrey Strawsma, and Tressa Senesac all made two field goals in the first period, while North Montgomery was 0-of-6 from the field.
The Chargers finally got on the board at the 4:50 mark in the second quarter with a pair of free throws from Madi Welch. Finally, in the very last seconds of the first half, North Montgomery converted a field goal on a Tori Warren basket as Benton Central took control 46-6.
North Montgomery didn’t quit though, continuing to be aggressive offensively in the second half, and cutting its’ 23 first half turnovers down to just five in the second half. The rebounding margin ended up almost dead even as the Bison had a 30-29 advantage.
The Chargers trailed 59-16 after three quarters, but a pair of Emily Sennett 3-pointers allowed North Montgomery to hold Benton Central’s margin to 13-10 in the three period. The junior led the Chargers with seven points. Warren, Welch, and Maddie Moseley each added four.
For the game, the Bison connected on 26-of-55 field goals, while the Chargers were just 6-of-33. Fisher and Senesac each had 11 for Benton Central, as 10 girls found the scoring column.
North Montgomery closes the season at 3-20, and will lose seniors Madison Altman, Kendall Humphreys, and Warren to graduation.
Benton Central, the No. 7 ranked team in Class 3A improves to 22-4 on the season and will play Lebanon on Monday night in the sectional championship game at Southmont at 7 p.m.
