GBB: Athenians fall to Trojans 51-29

Crawfordsville was unable to match Covington’s intensity in a 51-29 loss in girls’ basketball action on Tuesday night. The Athenians (2-17) out-shot the Trojans (12-7) by 13 with 53 shot attempts compared to Covington’s 40, but were out-rebounded 40-29, and out-hustled from start to finish. “I was disappointed tonight,” Athenians coach Tony Bean said. “I’ve got to be. We know we’ve got to turn this around quickly for Southmont on Saturday, and the girls are going to come in believing they’ve got a shot to beat Southmont, because obviously we already have.” A 59-51 victory over the Mounties on Nov. 16 was the last win for Crawfordsville, suffering 12 straight defeats since. Coincidentally that was also the last time Addie Laskowksi played, until Tuesday. The senior injured her leg the very next night in a 60-27 loss to Western Boone in the championship game of the Sugar Creek Classic. Laskowski returned the floor Tuesday, and provided a much needed spark for the Athenians, chipping in eight points off the bench. “We are going to have to figure out how to get Addie involved,” Bean said. “And she showed some things tonight, and obviously gave us some offense when we really needed it. Right now the problem is as a team, our shot’s not there at all.” The Athenians connected on 13-of-53 shots from the field, for just a 25-percent clip. Lauren Kellerman led the way with 13 points, but seven came in the fourth quarter after the Trojans stretched the lead to as much as 25 at 44-19. Reese Noble led Covington with 14 points, while McKenna Chapman and Chloe Morris added 12 each. Kellerman and Laskowski sparked a 6-0 Crawfordsville run to cut the lead to 14-11 early in the second quarter, but Noble and Chapman combined for 12 second quarter points to push the Trojans ahead 26-13 at the half. Crawfordsville never made it closer, only scoring six third quarter points. Crawfordsville is off until Saturday when they host Sagamore Conference and county rival Southmont at 6:30 p.m. Covington hosts North Vermillion on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Covington 51, Crawfordsville 29 Covington 14 12 13 12 — 51 Crawfordsville 5 8 6 10 — 29 Covington (12-7): Paige Messmore 1 0-0 2, Reese Noble 6 2-3 14, McKenna Chapman 4 2-5 12, Karsyn Engle 0 0-0 0, Abby Swaney 0 0-0 0, Madison Lawson 0 0-0 0, Hope Linville 1 2-2 4, Madison Karrfalt 0 102 1, Lauren O’Neill 1 0-0 2, Briley Peyton 0 0-0 0, Chloe Morris 5 2-4 12, Shyanne Steward 1 2-5 4, Shiann Haymaker 0 0-0 0; Totals 18-40, 10-21 51 Crawfordsville (2-17): Olivia Reed 0 1-2 1, Olivia Barnett 0 0-0 0, Lauren Kellerman 5 1-2 13, Tori Tesmer 0 0-0 0, Emma Balaz 0 0-0 0, Maycee York 2 0-0 4, Peyton Sinnet 1 1-6 3, Shea Williamson 0 0-0 0, Addie Laskowski 4 0-0 8, Georgia Kincaid 0 0-2 0; Totals 13-53 3-12 29 3-Point Shooting: Covington 3-8 (Chapman 2, Noble), Crawfordsville 2-16 (Kellerman 2) Rebounds: Covington 40, Crawfordsville 29 Turnovers: Covington 18, Crawfordsville 16
