LAFAYETTE — Crawfordsville’s boys basketball team won the middle of the game, but McCutcheon was too much on either end in an 83-64 Mavericks win.
McCutcheon, who moves to 6-9 overall, rode the shooting of Rowen Farrell to the win.
The junior, leading the Mavs with 18 points a game, rarely missed as he dropped a career-best 43. advertisement
“He (Farrell) got hot, we doubled on him defensively, and he still kept hitting shots,” Athenians coach David Pierce said. “He’s impressive.”
Aside from that part, Crawfordsville played well, and overcame an early deficit to take a lead.
“We were aggressive. We played hard, and shot a lot of free throws,” Pierce said. “We did everything right except for 16 turnovers and not shooting the ball well.”
The Athenians, who fall to 7-4 overall, fell behind 12-2 in the opening three minutes, mostly due to Farrell hitting 7-of-8 from the field.
Trailing 22-10 late in the first, the visitors found their footing, and with a 15-1 run, had the lead for a bit. The teams traded buckets and it was 35-33 Mavs at halftime.
The third was more back and forth, but a 9-0 close to the quarter opened the margin, and the home squad owned the final eight minutes.
“We out-rebounded them,” Pierce said, noting the 34-32 Athenians advantage. “We had 13 assists on our 22 field goals. We had three guys under the weather, and other guys stepped up big, starting with (Ty) Lynas and Cam (Saunders).
Lynas drew a starting assignment, and the sophomore scored six points and handed out a couple assists.
“We like to play fast, and he (Lynas) lets us play fast,” Pierce said.
Saunders was the agent in the middle, as the senior scored a career-high 20 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. He dropped a 3-pointer and had a steal.
“We’ve been working real hard with Cam on his catch-and-shoot,” Pierce said. “He grabbed a couple of big offensive boards too. He and (Will) Kellerman did what seniors do – they stepped up big.
Kellerman finished with 17 points and added four steals, three rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot. He was also 4-of-4 from the line.
For the game, Crawfordsville was 22-of-57 from the floor, 7-of-24 from deep and 13-of-21 from the line. The Mavericks were 36-of-55 from the field, 9-of-14 from long range and 2-of-6 from the stripe. Farrell’s six boards were a team-best.
“We had good energy,” Pierce said. “We had a good effort. We had a lot of open shots, and even gave up some in-close shots that we probably should have taken.
An off-night shooting is going to happen.
McCutcheon is back in action Thursday against West Lafayette in a make-up game, while the Athenians have two games on the weekend, starting with a home game Friday against Fountain Central and a Saturday game against Southmont.
McCutcheon won the jv game 46-38. Ian Hensley led C’ville with 15, and Alex Kellerman added 13.
