NEW MARKET — For the first time since 2013-14, Southmont's girls basketball team can be referred to as Montgomery County champions.
The Mounties claimed the title after crushing rival Crawfordsville 55-32 on Saturday as part of a girl-boy doubleheader.
After beating North Montgomery 42-26 two weeks ago, the Mounties (8-11, 3-3 SAC) wasted little time putting the Athenians (2-18, 0-6) away. Southmont out to a 12-5 lead by the end of the first period and stretched the lead to 26-11 at the halftime break.
Crawfordsville will host North Vermillion on Tuesday and Frankfort for Senior Night in the regular season finale on Friday. Southmont travels to Covington on Tuesday and will host Lebanon for Senior Night on Friday.
