Mounties win boys county title with victory over Crawfordsville


NEW MARKET — Southmont sniffed out Crawfordsville's game plan, and then settled in and cruised to an 84-70 victory over the Athenians to win a Montgomery County title for the first time since 2012-13.

Cam Chadd scored 14 of his 23 points in the first half, and made a lay-up and a 3-pointer late in the first period to get within four. Then Southmont put together a 21-3 run over the final six minutes of the first half to take the lead for good.

Chadd finished 6-of-9 shooting from the field and 9-of-13 from the free throw line. He also had eight rebounds. Howard was 6-of-11 shooting, including three 3-pointers. Ty Williams had 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting with five rebounds, and Scheidler finished with 12 points. Cole Wemer added nine points and 10 rebounds.

Southmont was 55 percent from the field (24-44) and 44 percent from 3-point range (7-16). Crawfordsville was 44 percent from the field (27-62) and 44 percent from 3-point range (11-25).

Southmont will host Lebanon and Crawfordsville will host Frankfort, both in the second game of a girl-boy doubleheader Friday.
