Mounties complete county sweep

Avery Hess scored a team-high 17 points.

Southmont’s girls basketball team knocked off Crawfordsville 71-45 in Sagamore Conference play on Saturday.

It was the Mounties’ second victory over the Athenians this season, and the win earned Southmont two more points in the Journal Review County Chase.

The Mounties (11-9, 2-4 SAC) jumped out from the start, took a 21-8 first quarter lead, and never looked back. Southmont finished with four scorers in double-digits and three with double-digit rebounds.

Junior Avery Hess led the Mounties with 17 points, five steals and two assists. Reagan Case had 16 points while Lilly Ward scored 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting along with 10 rebounds. Kasey Burton had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Marlowe McVay finished with eight points and 12 rebounds.

The Athenians (3-17, 0-6) were led by freshman Lauren Kellerman, who had 16 points and seven rebounds. Addie Laskowski had seven points, and Fabiola Castro, who was honored during Senior Night festivities before the game, added six.

The Athenians have a Tuesday game at North Vermillion and a Friday game at Frankfort to finish the regular season.

Southmont will look for their first five-game win streak since 2004-05 on Tuesday at home against Covington. They close the regular season next Friday at Lebanon.
