NEW MARKET — Crawfordsville’s 54-52 overtime win over Southmont in the Sugar Creek Classic Championship Game was simply that.
Both teams had a chance to win it in regulation, and then Southmont tied it twice in the overtime minutes, but finally, Crawfordsville’s James Gineris banked in a shot as the buzzer sounded to give the Athenians the win, and their second-ever Classic championship.
Gineris hit the game-winner, but he was the third guy rotating toward the basket as the Athenians played for that final shot.
A missed Athenians shot with :02.1 left was grabbed by Southmont’s Cole Wemer, and he was tied up by Crawfordsville’s Jack Sommer. The possession arrow gave the ball back to the Athenians.
Devin Guard and Cameron Harris led the Athenians in scoring with 15 each. Gineris had 13. Johnson finished with seven points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
The Mounties were led in scoring by Chadd’s 22. Swick had 13 points and nine boards. South was 18-of-38 from the field and 11-of-25 from deep. They had 25 rebounds and 14 turnovers.
Southmont has a home game next Friday against Seeger and travels to West Vigo next Saturday before the game at Crawfordsville.
