Chargers open boys season with win

SPEEDWAY — North Montgomery opened the season with a 63-51 victory over the Speedway Sparkplugs on Wednesday. The win marked the debut of new Charger Coach Eric Danforth who got what he asked from his players.

Coming into the season, Danforth knew he had two guards, senior Caleb Randolph and junior Justin Clary, who could score. Neither player disappointed the Charger faithful as Randolph collected a game-high 23 points followed by Clary’s 20. But, it was the effort by the entire squad that pleased the new head coach who understands he is employing more full court defensive pressure and a quicker offense than in the past few years at North Montgomery.

The Chargers took a 26-21 lead into intermission behind Randolph’s 10 second quarter points.

Randolph and senior Ben Dugard led the Chargers with seven caroms apiece.

The Sparkplugs were led by senior Desean Hampton’s double-double. The athletic forward grabbed 11 rebounds and scored 13 points. Speedway had two other double-digit scorers in Fritz and junior guard Chris Valentine who scored 15 and 13 respectively.

North Montgomery will play their home opener on Saturday when they entertain a good Lafayette Harrison team at 7:30 p.m.
