Breaks High School

Breaks High School: A Brief History

The community of Breaks, about five miles northwest of Crawfordsville, had a high school that opened in the late 19th century and continued into the early 20th century. Breaks High School closed sometime around 1920 but the school continued as an elementary vschool until the mid 20th century.

Available records are few but basketball records of other Montgomery County schools such as Crawfordsville, New Richmond and Wingate report tha

t these teams played Breaks High School in the first two decades of the 20th century. Although these records make it apparent that Breaks fielded a high school basketball team in the first two decades of the 20th century, the records for the Crawfordsville sectional of the Indiana sectional basketball tournament which was begun in 1915 does not list Breaks High School as ever participating in the sectional tournaments.

The Breaks School building still stands and has been converted into a private residence.

Breaks Basketball

Breaks High School opened its doors in 1901 and remained in operation until 1949. According to the Waynetown Despatch of Nov. 1901, there were about 120 students, and a three year high school course was taught thus making it anon-commissioned high school. Breaks went from non-commissioned to certified from 1913 to 1916. The high school lasted until 1916 when the school became and elementary school. The brick high school building which still stands and is now a private residence was built in 1906.

According to the Breaks yearbook of 1908, the Breaks first team played Elmdale, Young's Chapel and New Richmond in basketball and the second team played Young's Chapel, Elmdale and Round Hill. My guess is that the second team was a junior high team since Round Hill was a junior high. Breaks was about five miles NW of Crawfordsville and opened its doors in the late 1890s. The Breaks basketball team played Crawfordsville, New Richmond and Wingate but never joined the IHSAA or played in a sectional tournament.

Breaks High School—Blue and White

Persuading each his task renew,

That each may do his part.

Chorus: Blue andol song—True Blue and White

White, pure blu White, pure blue and white,

Tis you we”ll always love;

and with this thought that right is might,

We'll trust in Christ above.

Let's each to all be fair and true,
