Southmont High School was established in 1971 with the merger of five small high schools in southern Montgomery County. The schools merged were: Alamo, Ladoga, New Market, New Ross, and Waveland. The basketball teams for the newly formed high school were named the Mounties.
Since its opening in 1971, the boys’ basketball teams have won one sectional-1994. Dan Chadd, the current boys’ basketball coach, is the only Southmont graduate to become a basketball coach. The girls’ basketball teams have won seven sectionals-1979, 1984, 1986, 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1999.
