

Mounties pick up momentum with win at Scecina
INDIANAPOLIS — Southmont picked up momentum heading into the sectionals next week with a 46-38 regular season finale win over Indianapolis Scecina.
The 14th road game of the season in the 21-game schedule saw the Mounties never trail, although the Crusaders did tie the game at the end of the third quarter.
South moves to 7-14 for the season, as they head into their 2A sectional, which they will host.
Scecina falls to 7-15 as their season ends, and they head into 2A play


Athenians fall in OT at Covington
COVINGTON — The Crawfordsville boys’ basketball team wrapped up their regular season on Friday night with a 75-68 overtime loss at Covington
Down by as many as 10 in the second half the Athenians were able to force overtime as junior Jesse Hall hit a layup with 6.6 seconds left to tie the game at 64-64.
However in overtime a quick turnover by the Athenians turned into an easy layup by Covington. The next two plays Crawfordsville missed consecutive 3s and failed get a stop


Adversity has made Athenians stronger
After a summer slate of 30 games, Crawfordsville boys’ basketball was entering the fall ready to make history.
The Athenians were coming off a 18-win season, and poised to chase a second-straight Sagamore Conference title and their first sectional title since 2014.

The high school boys’ basketball regular season will conclude on Friday evening, with all three Montgomery County teams looking to end losing skids and head into their respective sectionals on a high note.

Ward to play at Hanover
NEW MARKET — Southmont senior Emma Ward will continue her academic and basketball career at Hanover College next fall.
Ward will join her sister, Lilly, who is already a member of the women’s basketball program.

Basketball Season Ends With Tourney Loss To Denison 75-69
Wabash saw its 2019-2020 basketball season ended Tuesday night with a 75-69 loss to Denison University in the quarterfinals of the North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament.

Faith leads Southmont’s Craig Carrell down path of coaching and ministry
It was a Saturday afternoon, and in the basement of Southmont High School Craig Carrell was busy doing laundry.
He had just guided his Mountie junior-varsity team to a win over North Montgomery, and had to prepare for the varsity Sugar Creek Classic game at Crawfordsville just a few hours later.
With the uniforms fresh, and players arriving to catch the bus, Carrell moved into the fieldhouse to watch the wrestling team in the Mountie Invitational.

Sectional brackets revealed
The IHSAA released the brackets for the 110th annual boys’ basketball state tournament on Sunday.
In Class 2A Sectional No. 38 at Western Boone, Fountain Central (10-13) will play the host Stars (10-11) in the second quarterfinal game on Tuesday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. Clinton Prairie (16-4) awaits the winner in Friday’s second semifinal.
On the other side of the bracket, Rossville (15-6) will play Carroll (Flora) (12-8), with Seeger (9-12) waiting in the first semifinal.

Now that the sectional draw has been made for the 2019-2020 tournament it would only be wise to look back at the past history of our county schools.

Mounties defense leads to senior night win over Mustangs
NEW MARKET —The Southmont boys’ basketball team used a strong defensive effort to send their seniors off with a 57-36 win over Fountain Central on Saturday night.
At the end of the third quarter Southmont (6-13) had only surrendered 19 points as they led 39-19. A 17-point fourth quarter by the Mustangs (10-13) was answered by an 18-point quarter from the Mounties as they cruised to a win.
